THE TOWN SPRINGBOK
The town Springbok
is the Capital of Namaqualand, which is an ideal place from where to
explore this area with it's own unique and special charms as well as
places of historical interest. Namaqualand is situated in the
northwest of South Africa, between Cape Town and Namibia.
MINING
Famous for its
wildflower display in spring, Namaqualand was one of the world's
most important copper mining areas at the beginning of the 20th
century. Nowadays the diamond mines are more important.
Because of its dry
desert like climate, agriculture is mainly absent and population
density low. Namaqualand is part of the Northern Cape Province.
NATURE
“Travelling from
Springbok in Namaqualand to Pretoria, the N14 will take you through
bleak, shimmering semi desert contrasted dramatically with lush
green vineyards, near Upington and the Orange River's fertile
valleys. Highlights along this route include the world's second
largest wine co-operative, the Augrabies Falls National Park, the
“Oasis of the Kalahari” at Kuruman and many charming little desert
towns en route.
